The Early Years
In January 2007, we issued a public appeal for documents and souvenirs from the first years of the friendship with Düsseldorf. We're delighted to have received several priceless items, and we will be publishing them here.
Hildegard Stephan's photo from her 1949 travel document
Hildegard Stephan was one of the German young people who came to Reading in 1949. Her report Three Months in Reading is a fascinating contemporary account of her life with Mr and Mrs Openshaw. Many thanks to Frau Stephan and Mrs Openshaw for their help.
We also have some letters and press cuttings that she sent us, and her travel document.
Maureen Richardson
Maureen Stevens (née Richardson) visited Erika Winter in Düsseldorf in around 1949, and has lent us her photos.
